The common procedure is holding the ignition in the on position without cranking for roughly ten minutes, waiting for the security indicator to change state, and on some procedures repeating that cycle up to three times for approximately thirty minutes total.

Three things owners should know about it. It is a deliberate security delay, not a technician padding the invoice. Nobody — independent or dealer — can shorten it.
