Ask three people in Fort Worth what they paid for a car key and you will hear three numbers that seem to have nothing in common. Usually the cars were not that different. What differed is how many working keys each owner had on the day they called. Call or text 817-842-1256 with your year, make, model and key count and we will quote the exact situation you are in.
The Short Answer
As of October 2026, car key replacement in Fort Worth costs $120 to $200 for a chipped key and $220 to $500 for a proximity smart key when a working key is present. European keys run $350 to $800. With no working key at all, most domestic and Asian vehicles fall between $180 and $450. A second matching key made during the same visit is about $65. Having one working key left is the cheapest moment to act.
Why Key Count Sets the Price
Modern cars do not trust a key because it fits. They trust it because it has been registered in the immobilizer's memory. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration describes these systems as preventing the engine from running unless the correct coded key is present, and the list of correct keys lives inside the car.
Adding a name to that list is easy when someone already on the list is standing there. A working key proves to the car that the session is legitimate, and the new key is enrolled beside it. When nobody on the list is present, the locksmith has to gain access to the list itself. That is a different procedure with different equipment, more verification and sometimes a built-in delay. Same car, same key blank, different job.
So before the make, before the model, the first question we ask is: how many keys work right now?
Cost by Key Count
| Your situation | What the job is | Chipped (turn-key) vehicles | Proximity (push-button) vehicles | Typical visit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Two or more working keys, want another | Add a key; some vehicles allow owner self-programming | $120-$200, or about $65 if added during another key visit | $220-$500 | 20-30 minutes |
| One working key | Add a key with programming equipment | $120-$200 | $220-$500 | 20-40 minutes |
| One key that works only sometimes | Diagnose, then add a key while it still responds | $120-$200 | $220-$500 | 30-45 minutes |
| Key works the door but not the engine | Chip or programming fault; replace or re-register | $120-$200 | $220-$500 | 30-45 minutes |
| No working key at all | All-keys-lost: verify ownership, originate cuts, access immobilizer | $180-$450 | $180-$450 | 45-90 minutes |
| Second matching key, same visit as any row above | Duplicate while everything is set up | About $65 | About $65 | Adds 10-15 minutes |
European vehicles sit in their own band of $350 to $800 across these situations, because of encrypted keys and brand-specific procedures. Our European car locksmith page covers those.
The pattern in the table is the point of this article. Reading down a column, the price does not climb until the last working key is gone. Then it steps up. The step is avoidable for as long as one key still works.
Situation by Situation
Two or more working keys
You are in the best position there is. On a number of vehicles, notably many Ford, Lincoln and older Chrysler products, an owner with two programmed keys can enroll a third without equipment by following a sequence in the owner manual. The blade still has to be cut correctly first. If your vehicle does not support that, adding a key is a short visit in the standard band. We explain the Ford version in our Ford Fusion key reference.
One working key
This is the most common call we get and the best time to make it. The working key authorizes the session and the new key is added in minutes. Nothing is erased, nothing has to be decoded, and the key can be duplicated or cut to code. If you bought the car this way, read bought a used car with one key.
One key that is failing
A key that starts the car on the third try is giving notice. The chip may be cracked, the fob battery may be weak, or the blade may be worn. The priority is to add a second key while the first still answers at all, because the moment it stops, the job moves down the table. For the diagnosis, see one key works and the other doesn't.
A key that turns but will not start the engine
If a key opens the doors and turns the ignition but the engine will not run, the metal is fine and the electronics are not. Sometimes it is a hardware-store copy with no chip. Sometimes the chip has fallen out of a cracked key head. Sometimes the key was never programmed. A flashing security light is the usual clue, covered in anti-theft light flashing and the car won't start.
No working key
All-keys-lost. This is a complete job, and it is still done at the car without a tow. The steps are:
- Verify ownership. Registration or title and matching photo ID.
- Open the car if it is locked, without damage.
- Originate the cut. From a key code where available, or by decoding a lock.
- Access the immobilizer. Through the diagnostic port, or on some vehicles by working with a module directly.
- Program new keys and, where the system allows, erase the lost ones.
- Test everything. Doors, ignition or start button, trunk, remote functions.
Some manufacturers impose a timed security delay before programming can begin, and it cannot be skipped. That is waiting time, not labor being padded. The full walk-through is in lost car keys with no spare and on our lost car keys page.
What Else Changes the Price
Turn-key or push-button
A chipped key is a blade with a transponder. A proximity key is a small radio transceiver with a battery, an antenna and often a rolling-code remote built in. The hardware costs more, which is the whole gap between the $120 to $200 band and the $220 to $500 band. More in smart key fob replacement.
The make
Domestic and Asian brands share the main bands. European brands do not. Within the main bands, vehicles that tie the key to several modules at once sit toward the top.
Model year
Newer vehicles increasingly protect the diagnostic port with a secure gateway, which requires authenticated access before any key can be programmed. Credentialed access for independent shops runs through the registry operated by the National Automotive Service Task Force. It adds a step, not a tow. On some push-button vehicles the key data lives in a dedicated computer, as described in Toyota and Lexus smart key ECU programming.
Whether lost keys should be erased
If keys were stolen rather than misplaced, ask for the missing keys to be removed from the car's memory. On an all-keys-lost job this usually happens as part of the procedure. NHTSA's vehicle theft prevention guidance notes that more than a million vehicles are stolen in the United States in a typical recent year, and a significant share of thefts involve keys or fobs left in or taken with the vehicle. An erased key cannot start the car.
Time of day
Our hours are Monday through Sunday, 8AM to 8PM. Calling during them keeps the job in the standard bands.
Dealership or Mobile Locksmith, by Key Count
The dealership comparison changes depending on which row of the table you are in.
With a working key, you can drive to a dealership. They will order or cut a key and program it in the service lane. The cost difference is mainly the price of the part and the labor rate. Dealership prices for the same key are commonly higher.
With no working key, the car cannot be driven there, so a tow is added before any key work starts. The American Automobile Association reports that lockouts and lost keys are among the most frequent reasons members request roadside assistance, in the millions of calls each year, and a basic membership may cover only a short tow. A mobile locksmith removes the tow from the equation.
On warranty, the Federal Trade Commission explains that federal law generally prevents a manufacturer from voiding a warranty simply because an independent provider did the work or supplied the part. A locksmith-made key does not put your coverage at risk.
Our side-by-side is in mobile locksmith versus dealership.
Four Numbers That Put It in Perspective
- About $65. The second key, same visit. It is the cheapest insurance in car ownership.
- $180 to $450. The lost-key band. The gap between this and the add-a-key band is what the spare saves you.
- Around $12,000. AAA's Your Driving Costs research, published through the AAA newsroom, has put the average yearly cost of owning and operating a new vehicle near this figure. Keys are a tiny slice of it until you have none.
- 96 percent. The share of 2015 to 2019 models from most manufacturers that had a standard immobilizer, according to the Highway Loss Data Institute, affiliated with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It is why nearly every key today has to be programmed, not just cut.
What the Trade Says
"When someone calls with one key, I tell them it is the cheapest day they will ever have to solve this. When they call with none, I can still solve it in their driveway. It just is not the same job, and I would rather explain that before I arrive than after." — an ALOA-credentialed Master Automotive Locksmith working the DFW metro
How to Move Up the Table Instead of Down It
- Count your keys today. Not the ones you think are in a drawer. The ones that start the car.
- If the answer is one, make a second this month. It is the lower band now and the higher band later.
- Test the spare twice a year. A fob that sits in a drawer for three years may have a dead battery or may have dropped out of the car's memory. See is a spare car key worth it.
- Keep the spare somewhere that is not the car. A spare in the glovebox is lost along with the car.
- Find the emergency blade and the backup start position if you have a push-button car, before the fob battery dies.
- Photograph your registration so you can prove ownership even if the paper copy is locked inside.
What to Have Ready When You Call
- Year, make and model.
- Turn key or start button.
- How many keys start the car right now.
- Where the car is parked, and whether it is locked.
- For lost keys: registration or title and matching photo ID.
With those five answers we can quote a firm figure inside the band before anyone drives to you. If a quote you receive elsewhere is far below these ranges and rises on arrival, that is a known pattern in this trade, and the Federal Trade Commission has warned consumers about locksmith listings that advertise a low price and charge a much higher one at the door.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does car key replacement cost in Fort Worth?
As of October 2026, with a working key present, a chipped key runs $120 to $200 and a proximity smart key runs $220 to $500, cut and programmed on site. European keys run $350 to $800. With no working key at all, expect $180 to $450 on most domestic and Asian vehicles. A second matching key made in the same visit is about $65.
Why does it cost more when I have lost every key?
Because the car has nothing to vouch for the new key. With a working key, the locksmith adds another alongside it. With none, the immobilizer has to be accessed directly, the cuts have to be obtained from a code or a lock instead of copied, ownership has to be verified first, and on some vehicles there is a mandatory security wait. The key itself costs the same. The work around it does not.
Is it cheaper to replace a key before I lose the last one?
Yes, almost always. Adding a key while one still works is the lower band, and a second key in the same visit is about $65. Replacing the only key after it is gone is the lost-key band and may involve a longer visit. The cheapest key you will ever buy is the spare you make while the original still works.
Do I need to tow my car to get a key made when all keys are lost?
No. A mobile locksmith makes the key where the car sits, whether that is a driveway, an apartment lot or a workplace. Towing is only needed if you choose a dealership, because the car has to be in their service lane to be programmed. Avoiding the tow is one of the main cost differences between the two routes.
What do I need to prove I own the car?
Registration or title in your name and a government photo ID that matches it. If the registration is locked inside the car, we can open the car first and check the documents before any key is made. Insurance cards and a matching address help in borderline cases. No legitimate locksmith will program a key to a car without verifying ownership.
Will my lost key still work if someone finds it?
That depends on the job. When all keys are lost and new ones are programmed, the old keys can usually be erased from the car's memory at the same time, so a found key will open nothing electronically and will not start the engine. Ask for that when you call if the keys may have been stolen rather than misplaced. The metal blade would still turn the door lock unless the locks are also rekeyed.
Does car insurance cover a lost car key?
Sometimes. Some comprehensive policies and some roadside or key-protection add-ons reimburse key replacement, usually subject to a deductible that can exceed the cost of the key. Check your declarations page or call your agent before assuming either way. We provide an itemized receipt you can submit.
