Smart Key cars
On a Smart Key RAV4, the picture changes. A certification ECU — the module Toyota uses as the authority for the Smart Key system — manages a set of antennas inside and outside the cabin. Those antennas detect the fob's proximity credential and hand the result to the immobilizer chain. Touch the handle, the car unlocks. Press the brake and the start button, the car runs.
The certification ECU is the reason Smart Key registration is a different procedure from bladed transponder registration. You are not writing a credential into an ignition-side authority; you are registering it into a system that also governs entry, and that system has its own security posture. Every Smart Key fob also carries an emergency insert blade hidden in the fob body, and that blade still has to be cut to your key code. What follows is the spec layer. Treat every part number as a starting point, not a guarantee — Toyota ran overlapping hardware, trim splits, and mid-cycle changes, and the only reliable identification is by VIN.
XA40 — roughly 2013 through 2018
This generation straddles the chip changeover, which makes it the most misquoted RAV4 on the road.

Chip. The G-chip to H-chip transition landed across the Toyota lineup around 2013 and 2014. Early XA40 build dates may still carry G-chip credentials; later ones almost certainly carry H. XA50 — roughly 2019 through 2025
The fifth-generation RAV4 arrived on Toyota's newer architecture with proximity entry far more widely fitted, including across the hybrid range that sells strongly in the metroplex.

Worn high-security blade
A ten-year-old TOY44H-style blade rounds off at the milled track. The car still starts because the transponder is fine, so nobody notices until the day they need the mechanical blade to open a door with a flat fob battery. Cracked key head
Toyota bladed key heads crack along the seam, usually from being dropped or from sitting in a pocket under body weight. One-key used purchases
This is the single most common RAV4 situation we see. A used RAV4 changes hands with exactly one key, the buyer drives it for two years, and then that key goes into a lake at Eagle Mountain. What could have been a routine spare-key add at the low end of the band becomes an all-keys-lost at the top of it. The math is not close.
Aftermarket fobs that half-work
An incorrect FCC variant may register and start the car but refuse to operate the power liftgate, or vice versa.
