Why You Need a Spare Car Key
Having only one car key is a ticking time bomb. When that single key is lost, stolen, broken, or stops working, you're stranded — and the cost of an all-keys-lost replacement is significantly higher than getting a spare made when you have a working key.
Here's the math: getting a spare key made while you have a working key typically costs $100-$350 depending on the vehicle. All-keys-lost replacement (when you have no working key) costs $250-$800+. That's 2-3x more expensive, plus you face the inconvenience of being stranded and potentially needing a tow.
Beyond the cost savings, a spare key provides peace of mind. If one key's battery dies, you have a backup. If you accidentally lock your keys in the car, your spare at home gets you back in. If one key is lost or damaged, you still have transportation while arranging a replacement.
We strongly recommend every vehicle owner have at least two working keys. If you currently have two keys and one stops working, get it replaced immediately — don't let yourself get down to a single key.
Types of Spare Keys We Make
We create spare keys for every vehicle type and key system.
Transponder keys (chip keys) are physical metal keys with an electronic chip. We cut the key blade to match your locks and program the chip to your vehicle's immobilizer. This is the most common key type for vehicles from 1998-2015.
Smart keys (proximity fobs) are keyless entry/push-button start fobs. We program the smart key to your vehicle's proximity system, code it for keyless entry, and verify push-button start. Most vehicles 2010 and newer use this type.
Remote head keys combine a physical transponder key with built-in lock/unlock buttons. We cut the blade, program the transponder chip, and sync the remote buttons.
Valet keys are limited-function keys that start the vehicle but may not open the glove box or trunk. Some owners want a valet key as their spare for added security.
Emergency key blades are the small metal keys inside smart key fobs. They open the door manually when the fob battery is dead. We can cut replacement emergency blades for any smart key.
Our Spare Key Process
Getting a spare key from us is simple and fast. Call or text with your vehicle year, make, and model. We'll confirm the key type, provide an exact price, and schedule a convenient time to come to your location.
When we arrive, the process takes 15-45 minutes for most vehicles. We cut the new key blade (if applicable) using precision cutting equipment, then connect our diagnostic tools to your vehicle and program the new key's transponder or smart key electronics.
We test the new key thoroughly — ignition start, door locks, trunk release, and remote functions. We also verify that your original key still works perfectly. You walk away with two fully functional keys.
For many vehicles, we can also program a third or fourth key during the same visit at a reduced per-key rate. Families who share a vehicle often benefit from having three keys — one for each driver plus a home spare.
Spare Key Cost Comparison: Us vs. Dealer
Getting a spare key from us is typically 30-50% less than a dealership, and we come to you instead of you going to them.
For a standard transponder key, dealers typically charge $150-$300 for the key plus $75-$150 for programming. Our all-inclusive price for the same service ranges from $100-$250.
For a smart key/proximity fob, dealers charge $250-$600 for the fob plus $100-$200 for programming. Our all-inclusive price ranges from $200-$400.
For luxury brands (BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, etc.), dealer pricing can exceed $500-$1,000 per key. Our pricing for luxury brand spare keys ranges from $300-$600.
All our prices include the key or fob, cutting, programming, and testing. No separate charges, no hidden fees. And we do it at your location — no need to leave your car at the dealer, arrange a ride, and come back to pick it up.
