The four jobs, properly separated

The single biggest source of frustration in Forester key work is that people buy the wrong thing online, and the reason they buy the wrong thing is that the vocabulary is genuinely confusing. Job 1: Remote keyless entry (RKE) programming. This teaches the vehicle a new radio transmitter for lock, unlock, panic, and on equipped models remote start and rear-gate release. It is a body-electronics operation. It does not involve the immobilizer at all.

Job 2: Transponder registration. This teaches the immobilizer to accept a new encrypted chip. Without it the car will crank and not start, or not crank at all. This requires proper tooling and, on many Subaru years, an immobilizer credential derived through secure channels.

Job 3: Proximity credential registration. On push-button-start Foresters, the smart fob carries a proximity credential that the keyless access system reads through cabin and exterior antennas. This is a superset of Job 2 — the fob does everything a transponder key does, plus hands-free detection.

Job 4: Mechanical cutting. Even proximity fobs contain an emergency blade for the driver's door. That blade has to be cut, either from the key code derived from the VIN or by decoding the existing lock.

A "programmed to your VIN, plug and play" fob purchased online has, at best, had Job 4 done for it. Jobs 1 through 3 happen at the vehicle. This is why so many online fob purchases end with a customer holding a fob that will not do anything.

The Forester call that goes wrong is always the same. Customer bought a fob online, it locks the doors, so they think programming worked and the car has a problem. It did not work. SJ generation: 2014–2018

The SJ Forester is the generation where Subaru's keyless access system became common on the volume trims in this market, and it produces a specific set of Fort Worth service calls.

The SK Forester uses the HYQ14AHK fob family on keyless-access trims. Architecturally similar to the SJ from a locksmith's point of view, with a few practical differences.

  • More electronics on the network. A no-start with a modern Forester has more possible non-key causes than a 2014 model, so the diagnostic step is worth more.
  • Fob battery symptoms present slightly differently. The vehicle typically warns before the fob dies entirely, but drivers who ignore that message for weeks arrive at total failure anyway.
  • Backup start still works. On essentially every push-button Subaru, holding the fob directly against or very near the start button lets the vehicle read the credential at short range even with a dead battery. If backup start works, the fob's credential is intact and the battery or transmitter is at fault. If it does not work with either fob, the suspicion shifts to the keyless access module or the immobilizer.

When there is no working credential, the job changes shape. Here is the actual sequence.

Step one: ownership verification. Before any technical work, a credentialed operator asks for the vehicle title or current registration plus a government-issued photo ID whose name matches, and records that verification on the invoice. Step two: battery load test. Subaru immobilizer and keyless-access circuits are voltage-sensitive. A marginal 12V battery produces convincing false no-key-detected faults, and replacing it is dramatically cheaper than replacing keys you did not need.

When it is not a key problem at all

A meaningful share of "my Forester key fob stopped working" calls resolve into something other than the fob. Four to rule out:

1. Fob battery. CR2032, a few dollars, replaceable in under a minute. Check this before anything.

2. 12V vehicle battery. Below roughly 11.5 volts under load, modern Subarus produce immobilizer-flavored complaints that vanish the moment voltage recovers.

3. Ignition cylinder or switch (bladed-key trims). If the key physically resists turning, sticks between positions, or the dash flickers with steering-wheel movement, that is a cylinder or switch problem, not a credential problem.
